Scales are the foundation of everything musical. Here are five that every guitarist should have under their fingers.

1. The Pentatonic Minor Scale

The most important scale for guitarists playing rock, blues, pop, and folk. The minor pentatonic has just five notes and is the basis for countless solos. Once you have Box 1 in position, try learning all five box positions across the neck.

2. The Major Scale

The building block of western music. Essential for understanding chord theory, songwriting, and sight reading. Start with C major (no sharps or flats) as an open position scale.

3. The Natural Minor Scale (Aeolian Mode)

The darker, more emotional cousin of the major scale. Widely used in classical, rock, and folk music.

4. The Blues Scale

Add a flattened 5th to the minor pentatonic and you get the blues scale — giving your playing that authentic bluesy feeling that's so immediately recognisable.

5. The Major Pentatonic Scale

Perfect for country, pop, and brighter-sounding rock solos. Learning when to use major vs. minor pentatonic is a key skill for any guitarist.

How to Practise Scales

Always use a metronome. Start slow and increase speed gradually. Practise ascending and descending. Apply them by playing along to backing tracks in the corresponding key.
