What Does RSL Grade 5 Guitar Actually Involve?

What is RSL Grade 5?

RSL (RSL Awards) is one of the most respected music examination boards in the world. Their guitar grades run from Premiere to Grade 8, with Grade 5 marking the transition from beginner/early intermediate into solid intermediate territory. Most students who reach Grade 5 have been playing consistently for 3–5 years.

What's In the Exam?

Pieces (60 marks) — Three pieces from a set list spanning different musical periods and styles. The repertoire includes a range of genres and compositions suited to the intermediate guitarist.

Scales & Arpeggios (21 marks) — A range of scales across multiple positions on the neck, played smoothly and in tempo.

Sight Reading (21 marks) — An unseen piece played on the spot. At Grade 5, these passages involve moderate complexity with some position shifts and rhythmic variety.

Aural Tests (18 marks) — Identifying intervals, clapping rhythms, singing back melodies, and commenting on musical features.

Is Grade 5 Hard?

It's a genuine step up from the lower grades, but very achievable with consistent practice. The pieces are musically rewarding, and the skills developed make you a confident and capable guitarist.

What Does It Unlock?

Grade 5 is widely recognised as an important milestone. It demonstrates real commitment and ability, and provides a strong foundation for teaching beginners, performing at local events, and continuing your musical journey toward the advanced grades. Grades 6, 7, and 8 are regarded as equivalent in standard to A-Level study.
